Refuge Band
Hey Band,
I want to start this blog by telling you all how proud I am of you. I feel that you have all been making tremendous progress this past semester. You may feel as if nothing has changed in you and that I'm crazy but I'm viewing things from a different perspective. I get to read your work with the exercises. I get to see how your understanding of worship and of God grows. I get to see how God reveals new ideas about His nature to you. Don't fall into the trap of thinking the things you do are small and not as good as the things other people do. We are the body of Christ and each one of us has a specific position in the band, in the youth group, and in the church as a whole. As long as you are putting in the effort it will be rewarded. I do notice how much effort you all put into being in the band and I do not thank you and praise you enough for this hard work. You are God's workmanship and I am proud to be in a position to see Him work in all of our lives for His glory.
Next I want to formerly announce the new semester of the Worship Leadership Team. If you are currently a junior or a senior you may come to me and ask for an application and I will explain the process more to you at that time.
Finally, next Monday is our last Band Meeting of the Fall 2011 semester, and so if you have not caught up in the exercises you should do so this week.
1. Psalm 146: write it out word for word, then rewrite it using your own words.
2. Psalm 146:1-2: write it out word for word, then rewrite it using your own words. After that, use one page and respond to the verses in any way you wish.
3. Psalm 146:3-4: same directions as above.
4. Psalm 146:5-6: same directions as above.
5. Psalm 146:7-10: same directions as above.
There is a purpose to these exercises, even of you do not see it, and putting in the effort to complete them shows your ability to act as a part of the band rather than staying as a solitary unit.
Monday, December 12, as we decided last night, we will have a time to hang out and have our own "Christmas Party" rather than having a band meeting. So from 5pm until 6pm we will celebrate this past semester and enjoy each others' company.
Thank you all for your commitment to this band and for everything you sacrifice for the glory of our God and King.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Hey Band,
I just wanted to take some time to wish you all a very happy thanksgiving. And I wanted to let you know that I thank God for each and every one of you and your involvement in this band. It is an incredible blessing to be able to see all of you grow and develop both in your faith and your musical abilities. You guys are awesome! :)
Refuge, if you find yourself getting bored as this Thanksgiving break comes to a close I hope you will take the opportunity to catch up on the band exercises:
1. Psalm 146 (write it out word for word, then write it again in your own words)
2. Psalm 146:1-2 (write it out word for word, then write it again in your own words, then take a page to respond to it in any way shape or form)
3. Psalm 146:3-4 (same instructions as the last exercise)
4. Psalm 146:5-6 (same instructions as the other ones)
I know this seems tedious but there is a point to all of it :).
Anyway, be good to your family today and I will see you all again either on Monday or on Thursday.
Blessings,
-Jordan

Refuge Band
Hey Band,
First I want to remind you that this Monday there will be NO band meeting (Oct. 31). Be safe and remember to let the message of Christ dwell among you - be salt and light to the world. :)
Exercise: A lot of you were confused about the exercise. Remember back to the last one where we took Psalm 146 and first wrote out all 10 verses word for word (in the translation of your choice), and then rewrite it in your own words. For this exercise we are focusing only on verses 1 and 2. Do the same thing as the last time (write them word for word and then in your own words). Once you have done that write one page (either handwritten or typewritten) in response to those 2 verses. This response can be anything. It can be a prayer to God telling him how the verses made you feel, an explanation of what was most interesting about the verses and why, a song you write based on the verses. Just random thoughts about the verses. Really, it can be anything. As long as it takes up one page and it is in response to the verses. Have this done by the next band meeting, November 7. And if you have not gotten the original exercise done yet (writing and rewriting the entire psalm) have that finished by then as well.
Schedule: Here is the band schedule of who is playing for the rest of 2011. Things may change, but this is What is probable as things look now.

Alright, that is it for now. I want to thank you all for your efforts and dedication to God and His calling to have you be a part of the band. I know that there have been a few bumps in the road this year for a lot of us and I want you to know that I have every confidence in all of you that we can rise to the challenge God has placed before us to grow with Him and be leaders of worshiping Him. Along with the bumps have come amazing growth and understanding from many of you. I thank God that He has given me such incredible band members who have such hearts for Him. Those who are struggling, stay strong. There are good reasons for what is happening. Don't let things bring you down but use them to grow closer to the Lord. Those of you who are experiencing growth, be on guard. Those moments of growth are sometimes immediately followed by moments of difficulty. This does not mean you're doing anything wrong. Remember that God has a plan for all of us and as you grown closer to Him you will come to see that plan more and more. You are all loved. Thank you for following through with your commitment.

Wildside Band
Hey band,
As you should remember, tomorrow night is our annual costume party at Wildside, so there will be NO band meeting. Also, practice will be moved from starting at 4:30 to starting at 5:15. We will be playing some special music during the mingle time.
Thank you guys for staying up to date on what's going on and having such great attitudes about the band.

Refuge Band
Hey Band,
It has been quite a week. First, those of you who weren't at the meeting on Monday, you need to know that I'm giving everyone an extra week to complete the Psalm 146 exercise (see the blog I posted about this exercise). It must be completed by the next Band meeting on October 17. Thank you to everyone who has been coming to the meetings and completing the exercises. I hope that you have been looking at these exercises as opportunities to gow in your faith and your understanding of worship. Also, I want to thank Josh, Kaitlyn, Alison, and Lili for being understanding and willing to have things changed up on them so suddenly.
Next, the Worship Night. As you already know, we are all expected to be at every Worship Night. Our first one is this Friday. I understand if there are circumstances that will keep you from coming, but I need to know by tomorrow (Thursday) night at 5 pm whether you will be going or not (that means you tell me if you are going, and you tell me if you are not going). I know some of you have already talked to me. You guys are okay. If you will not be able to go, I need to know what is keeping you from worshipping with us.
While we are there I expect us all to be taking this night seriously. That means we will try our best to engage with God during the night. The response stations are to help facilitate this, and if you use them, use them appropriately. Be an example during everything that is going on. If you are not taking the night seriously, how can we expect students who are not in the band to take it seriously? Also, your attitude and demeanor shows me how seriously you take being a part of the band. This night is an amazing opportunity to connect with God. Use it as such. Do not waste this experience. Also, we are all expected to be there on time. Do not be late. The night begins at 7. Try to be there by 6:45.
The last thing I have for you guys is the Band meeting on October 31 will be cancelled, so enjoy the night off, but remember that we all committed ourselves to living a godly lifestyle.
Thank you, everyone, for serving God with all of your hearts. If you haven't noticed, there has been an incredible shift in the quality of worship we have been offering to God lately. I have seen, and others have seen, our hearts opening up more and more to allow the Holy Spirit to be moving through us and among us. It has been incredible for me to see all of you wrestling with new ideas, and stretching yourselves to new degrees, and I thank you all for allowing me to be a part of that.

WILDSIDE AND REFUGE
Hey Bands,
First I will give you guys in Wildside the schedule of who is singing for the month of October. Then I will give Refuge their Worship Exercise for the week.
Thursdays this month will look like this:
10/6
Vocals - Aubrey, Macey
Drums - Matt
Bass - Isaac
10/13
Vocals - Nikki, Ciara
Drums - Matt
Bass - Isaac
10/20
Vocals - Aubrey, Macey
Drums - Matt
Bass - Isaac
10/27
Costume Party (special music)
Vocals - Aubrey, Ciara
Drums - Matt
Bass - Isaac
This schedule, as always, is subject to change depending on what may occur throughout the month, but this is what is expected to happen.
REFUGE BAND
This part is for you. As you all should know by now, attendance of the Band meetings is a significant part of being in the band. If you are not attending the meetings, you are not acting as if you are a part of the Band. Again, I remind you that if you absolutely must miss a Band meeting you need to notify me (through text, phone call, email, Facebook, this blog, through Isaac, through somebody else, some sort of way) BEFORE the meeting starts at 5pm. These meetings are designed for us to grow closer to God and to each other, and to broaden our understanding of worship. It is not a punishment, but a blessing that you are expected to be present at all meetings.
Keeping that in mind, you all should have turned in our first Worship Exercise last night. If you failed to turn it in, you have been told of the consequences and will be held to them. Those of you who missed last night's meeting or need a reminder of what this week's Exercise is, here are the directions:
Look up Psalm 146. Rewrite, word for word, the entire psalm (it is only 10 verses) in whichever version of the Bible you feel most comfortable using. Please write at the top which version you used. Once you have handwritten the psalm word for word, you may either type or write out the psalm using your own words. This is what you feel the main points of the psalm are. I should be able to see each element of the original psalm in the psalm. Feel free to use multiple versions of the Bible (I suggest NIV, TNIV, ESV, NASB, NLT, and NET). I suggest that you copy the psalm in one version, then read the psalm in other versions and take notes of the differences before you rewrite it in your own words. This will give you a greater understanding of the intended meaning of the psalm, but no, it is not required that you do that. In short, you are required to:
1. Copy Psalm 146, word for word, handwritten (write down which version you use).
2. Rewrite the psalm in your own words (you may do this longhand or typewritten).
Thank you all for the effort you put into this band. You are all doing important work for God, and I am thoroughly appreciative for each and every one of you. I look forward to seeing what God has in store for us as we continue worshiping Him with all that we are.

Sundays and REFUGE
Hey Band,
This Sunday will be the first Sunday morning of October, and with that comes a new schedule! There will be a change-up, however, as this weekend I will be gone along with Isaac, Robby, and Todd. There will still be a Student Ministries Sunday Morning, but there will be no band. Worship will be a bit different, so be sure to come and be supportive of the worship and the ministry. Here is the schedule for Sundays for October:
10/2 - No Band
10/9
Drums - Daniel
Bass - Lili
Vocals - Ciara
A. Guitar - Danielle
10/16
A. Guitar - Josh
Vocals - Chelsea
10/23
Drums - Daniel
Bass - Austin
Vocals - Macey
A. Guitar - Danielle
10/30
A. Guitar - Josh
Vocals - Ciara
As you can see, Sundays in October will be a bit different. Some weeks we will have it be acoustic to provide a more intimate setting. Please be praying that this will be conducive to the Spirit of God working in the hearts of those there. Now on to Refuge:
Refuge Band, if you were not at the meeting on Monday, you missed more discussion and an exercise was given to you to be completed by our next meeting on Monday 10/3. Even if you were not there, I expect you to complete this exercise. If you do not complete this exercise and have it turned in to me on Monday, you will not be allowed to play the next time you are scheduled to play. This exercise is meant to help us grow in our knowledge and concept of God. Try to think outside of the box as you complete it. Here is the assignment:
1. Pray before answering the questions.
2. Talk to an adult leader (whether face to face, email, text, facebook, phone call, fax, carrier pidgeon...) about the questions, and quote them.
3. Answer these questions: How is worship of God essential to living (to life)? If worship of God is essential to everyone's lives, how can we reflect that at Refuge? What is our responsibility as worship leaders at Refuge?
Also, if you have not been coming to the meetings, you HAVE to be coming to the meetings. I have been keeping track. Those of you who have not been attending and have not been contacting me about it will be talked to. You all signed commitments saying you would attend the meetings and participate in the conversations. It is not fair to the rest of the band, to me, to Refuge, to your own spiritual health, and most especially to God for you to simply not come.
That being said, the following schedule of who is playing at Refuge for October is subject to change:
10/4
Drums - Robby
Bass - Lili
Vocals - Andrew, Chelsea
E. Guitar - Brandon
10/11
A. Guitar - Josh
Flute - Kaitlyn G.
Vocals - Alison
10/18
Drums - Robby
Bass - Austin
Vocals - Andrew, Chelsea
E. Guitar - Brandon
10/25
A. Guitar - Josh
Flute - Kaitlyn G.
Vocals - Alison
I will pass out these schedules at our next Band Meeting.
I want to thank you all for serving God with your talents. So far this year I feel we have brought worship to a new level. Now I want us to go even farther, dig even deeper, and worship even more passionately. I know that we can accomplish this together and with the power of Jesus Christ fueling us. Let's do this!

Wildside Band Tonight!!!
Hey Wildside Band,
There is a last minute change in plans. I am giving you all the night off. There will be no practice or band meeting tonight. Instead, I will be leading the group in a slightly different form of worship and I would like you to be in the audience participating in that. I will send a text to each of you about this as well.
Thank you for being so great you guys. :)

Refuge Band Update
Hey Band,
There are a few things I want to address in this blog. Read all the way through in case any of it will be important for you to know.
First, a correction to a couple of previous posts. For the Sunday morning schedule for September I accidentally forgot Youth Sunday was in there. So if you look at the schedule for September, skip over the 18th. We will get back to the regularly scheduled band on the 25th. So nothing changes about the Sunday schedule except we skip over the 18th because of Youth Sunday.
Also, Austin will be playing bass for Youth Sunday rather than Lili.
And lastly, I do expect everyone to be attending the band meetings on Monday nights. It is a requirement, or you do not get to play on Tuesdays. I understand that there are times you will be unable to make it. In such circumstances you must simply inform me beforehand. Text, phone call, email, Facebook, etc. As long as you send it beforehand everything will be okay. There are a few of you who have not been informing me beforehand and simply not showing up to the meetings. I will be speaking with you about this. But be prepared to start coming to the meetings.
Thank you all for serving God with your talents. I am grateful to have you all be a part of this band.

Hey Band,
Youth Sunday is just one week away, and the Band has been posted in my office.
E. Guitar - Bandon
A. Guitar - Josh
Bass - Lili
Drums - Benjamin
Flute - Kaitlyn G.

Just to make sure you all are aware, the schedule for practice has been changed slightly. We will be practicing an hour earlier on Saturday from 3-5pm rather than 4-6. Refuge Band Meeting And YOUTH SUNDAY
Hey Refuge Band,
This Monday there will be no meeting because it is Labor Day. There will still be a band on Tuesday, just no band meeting Monday. Our next meeting will be Monday, September 12.
YOUTH SUNDAY!!!
Sign-ups are still in my office, but if you want to be considered to play, you HAVE to sign up by this Thursday (September 8). I will have the band posted by that Sunday (September 11) and explain how everything is going to work at our band meetings that week.
Thank you all for being a part of the bands this year. Remember, HUGE things are going to happen because of us and through us. Keep up on your devotions and keep God at the forefront of your mind and reflect Him through your words and actions.

Refuge, Wildside, Sunday Morning, and more...
Hey Band,
So here's who is playing tonight for Refuge:
Guitar: Brandon
Bass: Lili
Drums: Robby
Vocals: Alison
The set will be posted in my office at the church. Also, Refuge, next week is the Ultimate Showdown, so there will be no music that night. There will, however, still be a Band meeting on Monday. There were many of you who did not show up to last night's meeting and I will be talking with you about that to make sure that doesn't happen again. :)
Wildside, this week is our first outreach event, Survivor: Wildside, and there will be no music this week. So no band, and no Band meeting this week. The following week Isaac will start leading the Band for a few weeks and leading the Band meetings. Remember, you are expected to attend the 5:30 meetings even on weeks you are not playing.
Sunday morning, this Sunday most of the church will be away at Family Camp, so there is not going to be a youth service. There is only one church service at 10am this Sunday. If you are not at Family Camp, it would be nice to see everyone at that service. :)
Also, our first Youth Sunday of the school year is coming up on September 18. Talk to me for more information about that.
Thank you for your commitment to the Lord and His ministry.

Refuge 8/22
Hey Refuge Band,
Thank you all for your commitment to the Band and for checking the blog regularly. As I said in an earlier post, tonight is the first Refuge Band meeting! We will be meeting from 5 to 6 pm at the church regularly on Monday nights from this point forward.
Just a reminder, this meeting is for everyone. If you will not be able to make any of these meetings you have to in some way notify me beforehand. Because this is the very first meeting like this, I will be more lenient on this if some of you forget to come.
Also, be sure to bring your binders to these meetings. We will be using them.
Thank you all for serving the Lord with your talents. I'll see you tonight.

Wildside 8/18
Hey Wildside Band,
Here are the songs for tonight:
Awesome Is the Lord
Reaching For You
Remain
As I mentioned earlier, tonight will be an acoustic set with just guitar and vocals. We are not going to do an opening song for the night, so we will just have the first set of 2 songs and the second set after the message of 1 song.
Also, the first Band Meeting is tonight. If you guys don't remember, everyone is expected to attend these meetings, whether it is their night to play or not. This is the first one, so I will be lenient if not everyone is there, but I hope to see that all of you have been reading this blog and know that the meetings start tonight at 5:30.
Thank you,

Guitar - Trevor
Vocals - Macey, Nikki
Songs are:
Take It All
Everyday
Cannons
Ready Now
Sunday, the songs are yet to be determined, but the band is:
Bass - Lili
Drums - Nick
Vocals - Macey
Refuge next Tuesday, the band is yet to be determined completely. If I have talked to you about playing, then that is still on. The songs we will be doing are:
We Won't Stay Silent (A) - Tim Hughes
Reaching For You (A) - Lincoln Brewster
Our God (A) - Chris Tomlin
I Will Follow (A) - Chris Tomlin
You'll Come (A) - Hillsong
As you can see, that will be a night of the key of A. I didn't plan it that way, but all of the songs have a different feel, so staying in the same key shouldn't be that big of an issue. If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. Thank you, everyone.

Rough Start
Hey Band,
I apologize for the difficulties we've had so far with the schedules. Because I am still interviewing people I haven't been able to nail down exactly how the schedule is going to be so for this first month it will continue to be a bit squishy and we will just have to work together to get everything figured out (at least until everyone is interviewed. Then we can get back into some normalcy).
For tomorrow here is the band line up:
Bass - Austin
Drums - Nick
Small band, but we will be playing with a lot of energy and it will be great. I will be interviewing mostly everyone who hasn't been interviewed this week so things will get a bit easier.
Thank you, guys for checking the blog and staying on top of things. You're doing great. :)

First Week!
Hey Band,
This is our first week of Refuge and Wildside. We had a great time at Band Camp last week and I feel we are ready to start this year off with a bang. I have already begun interviewing a few of you and will continue to do so in the following weeks.
A quick note about the Band meetings. I want to get everybody caught up on how the Band is going to work this year before we start having official meetings. So instead I am going to use that time to talk to those who missed all or part of Band Camp, get them their shirts, and set up interview times with them. I will keep the blog posted on when we will start having meetings that everyone will need to go to.
As it stands now the schedule for the first Refuge will be:
Bass - Austin
Drums - Nick
Vocals - Chelsea
Flute - Kaitlyn G.
I am still talking to Robby about what he wants as far as songs but I am planning on them being new songs for the most part so come ready to learn and learn quickly. :)
Wildside, I will be having more interviews throughout this week but as it stands the schedule is:
Vocals - Ciara
I am also still talking with Isaac about what he wants as far as music but it will probably be new songs as well. :)
Thanks for everything you guys do. This year is going to be great. :)

Begin the Begin...
Hey Band,
This is the new Student Ministries’ Worship Band Blog (or just Band Blog). On this blog you will find the Band schedules month to month, as well as other updates of which you will need to be made aware. I expect you each to check this blog at least once a week to see if you are needed to do something extra for that week.
This week’s update is about the Band meetings. There will be some changes to the meetings this year as compared to last year.
Refuge - Meetings will be held at the church on Monday nights from 5-6pm. Every Refuge Band member is expected to attend these weekly meetings, even on weeks you are not playing. Practices will be held at the same time as last year’s were: Tuesday nights from 5-6pm. This will enable us to have thorough discussions with the entire band on Monday nights that won’t interfere with practices on Tuesday nights.
Wildside - No more Wednesday practices! This year practices will be held at the church on Thursday nights only from 4:30-5:30pm. After practice we will have our meeting from 5:30-6pm, allowing us to finish the meeting by the time doors open at 6pm. If you are late to practice we will push our meeting time back and it will eat into your free time before Wildside, so do not be late.
Also, Wildside, this year I will be speaking more often and Isaac will be leading the Band more often. On weeks that he leads he will also lead the band meetings. Understand that you are expected to give Isaac the same level of respect you are to show to me. Any disrespect will be dealt with by me.
Everyone - This year we will have interviews as part of the application process. You are not technically a part of the Band until you have your interview with me.
I know this is a lot of information, but the beauty of this is that you can look at this anytime from home. I know this is going to be an amazing year and that God has great things in store for us. Thank you all for being a part of Band Camp 2011!
